Montreal Approves BSL

I’m barking mad today. The city of Montreal, Canada has gone forward with a ban on “Pit bull” dogs. Montreal city council voted Tuesday in favor of changes to its animal control bylaw to include a ban on new ownership of pit bull & pit bull-type dogs. The final vote was 37-23 in favor of the ban. What is a “pit bull-type dog”? That’s a very broad description which could be applied arbitrarily.

The Montreal SPCA said in a statement: “If the city of Montreal truly wanted to ensure public safety, it would not have forced a rushed adoption of controversial legislation which is unfair, unenforceable & most importantly, ineffective.”

The new bylaw will apply to all 19 boroughs of Montreal & will define pit bulls as:

  • Staffordshire bull terriers.
  • American pit bull terriers.
  • American Staffordshire terriers.
  • Any mix with these breeds.
  • Any dog that presents characteristics of one of those breeds. (what does that even mean?)

Those who now own a dog of those breeds & already live in Montreal will have to acquire a special permit in order to keep their pet by Dec. 31, 2016. They also must muzzle their dog if they go out anywhere, regardless of the dog’s age.

BSL legislation is based in ignorance. These laws are founded in lazy thinking & cold indifference. A dog is a dog. C-TAG is a proven viable alternative which should be adopted everywhere.

My heart goes out to the people of Montreal who’s dogs are now at risk simply because of how they look. End BSL everywhere.
